Abstract

          Over the past few years, several attempts have been performed to find alternative “chemical proxies” in order to discriminate “tsunami backwash deposits” from “typical marine sediments”. A wide range of statistical tools has been selected in order to investigate the sediments and/or terrestrial soils transportation mechanism during the tsunami inundation period by using several types of chemical tracers.

Long-range Transboundary Atmospheric Transport of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Carbonaceous Compositions, and Water-soluble Ionic Species in Southern Thailand

Abstract

          This study investigated atmospheric particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter of < 2.5 μm (PM2.5) observed at the Prince of Songkla University (Phuket Campus) in southern Thailand. All samples (n = 75) were collected using MiniVol™ portable air samplers from March 2017 to February 2018. Carbonaceous aerosol compositions, i.e., organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC), water-soluble ionic species (WSIS), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the PM2.5 samples were identified and quantified.

          Biomass burning (BB) affects fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration and ozone (O3) formation by emitting gaseous precursors and primary aerosols. The Impacts of BB in peninsular Southeast Asia (BB-PSEA) on PM2.5 concentration and O3 formation in southern China are evaluated using a source-oriented WRF-Chem model to simulate an air pollution episode from March 21 to March 25, 2015. Hospital out-and-in-patients as Functions of Trace Gaseous Species and Other Meteorological Parameters in Chiang-Mai, Thailand

Abstract

          The aims of this study were to investigate the impact of meteorological parameters and trace gas concentrations on daily hospital walk-ins and admissions in Chiang-Mai province, Thailand, during 2007–2013. Advanced statistical models, including t-tests, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Multiple Linear Regression Analysis (MLRA) and Incremental Lifetime Particulate Matter Exposure (ILPE), were constructed using meteorological data from the Pollution Control Department (PCD), Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), Thailand, and the Thai Meteorological Department at Chiang-Mai Province Air Quality Observatory Site (TMCS) as well as the number of walk-in and admitted patients at Nakornping Hospital, Chiang-Mai (NHCM).

Abstract

          The optical properties of atmospheric secondary brown carbon (BrC) aerosol are poorly understood because of its chemical complexity, and this has hampered quantitative assessments of the impacts of this light-absorbing material on glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau (TP). For this study, a statistical approach was developed to investigate BrC light absorption over the southeastern margin of the TP.

          Corporate social responsibility (CSR) studies have investigated the differences among five parameters: gender, age, education, income, and occupation; however, the findings are generally dissimilar. For instance, no comprehensive concordance has been reached on the performance and importance of the differences among those five parameters regarding stakeholder expectations and perceptions of CSR activities.

Enhanced light absorption due to the mixing state of black carbon in fresh biomass burning emissions

Abstract

          A lack of information on the radiative effects of refractory black carbon (rBC) emitted from biomass burning is a significant gap in our understanding of climate change. A custom-made combustion chamber was used to simulate the open burning of crop residues and investigate the impacts of rBC size and mixing state on the particles' optical properties.

Abstract

          Carbonaceous compositions of PM2.5 were measured in the heart of Bangkok from 17th November 2010 to 19th January 2012, and a data set of 94 samples was constructed. Effects of day-of-week trends and vehicle types on PM2.5-bound TC, OC, and EC were carefully investigated. In this study, OC was the most important contributor to the total PM2.5 mass concentration.

Effect of agricultural waste burning season on PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) levels in Northern Thailand

Abstract

          Smoke from agricultural waste burning causes hazardous haze pollution in Southeast Asian countries every year. Besides traces of a few toxic gases several persistent organic pollutants, natural, and anthropogenic emissions are released, resulting in adverse health effects. The study focuses on identification of sources of PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during the non-haze and haze seasons and investigates the concentration and toxicity of fine particulate matter, especially in the middle of biomass burning period.

Discrimination of the geographical origins of rice based on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Abstract

          Over the past few decades, several techniques have been applied to identify the geographical origins of rice products. In this study, the chemical characterization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was carefully conducted by analysing PAHs in rice samples collected from private sector planting areas located in Bali and Yogyakarta, Indonesia (i.e. ID; n = 20), west sides of Malaysia (i.e. MY; n = 20), Mandalay, Legend, Myingyan, Myanmar (i.e. MM; n = 20), northern parts of Lao PDR (i.e. LA; n = 20), central parts of Cambodia (i.e. KH; n = 20), northern parts of Vietnam (i.e. VN; n = 20), and Thailand (i.e. TH; n = 22).
